In the early 1970's, the Air Force decided to attempt to gain accreditation and recognition for Air Force training programs. Representatives of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), Air University, and the United States Air Force Academy held numerous conferences in 1971 to discuss increased training for Air Force non-commissioned officers (NCOs). These conferences, in turn, recommended the foundation of an Air Force community college. On November 9, 1971, GenJohn D. Ryan, Air Force Chief of Staff, approved the establishment of the Community College of the Air Force. The Secretary of the Air Force approved the plan January 25, 1972, and the college was officially established on April 1, 1972, at Randolph AFB, TX.^[3]

Until the mid-1970s, the CCAF offered only certificate programs. It became apparent that CCAF standards exceeded the minimum requirements of associate degree programs in civilian community colleges. Therefore, in 1975 the Air Force sought degree-granting authority for the college from Congress. President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-361 on July 14, 1976 authorizing the AETC commander to confer the associate degree.

Following an evaluation in October 1976, the Commissioner of Education certified degree-granting authority in January 1977. The college awarded its first AAS degree in April 1977.

When the Commission on Occupational Education Institution charter was limited in 1975 to non degree-granting institutions, the CCAF began seeking accreditation from the SACS Commission on Colleges. The Commission on Colleges accredited the CCAF on December 12, 1980. In 2004, Air University became accredited by the SACS Commission on Colleges to award associate and master’s degrees. CCAF now shares in Air University’s regional accreditation. CCAF was separately accredited by SACS from 1980-2004.

Oxford University cannot take many more working class students because only a limited number meet the academic standards required, its admissions director has said. Mike Nicholson warned there was a "finite pool" of deprived sixth-formers with straight As to fill the university's undergraduate places

He said the university was committed to increasing the "potential pool of candidates", but insisted it received more applications from private schools in key subject areas such languages and science. Mr Nicholson was speaking as a study criticised elite universities for failing to recruit enough students from poor homes.

The Higher Education Policy Institute said Britain's top institutions were spending millions in grants for the most deprived students - but numbers were failing to increase.

In a controversial move, it said universities should be forced to put money for bursaries into a single fund - allowing it to be diverted to those colleges with the most poor students.

But the recommendation was condemned as a "tax" on top-ranked universities.

Professor Steve Smith, vice-chancellor of Exeter University and chairman of the 1994 Group, said: "A national bursary scheme would effectively be a tax, a forced pooling of tuition fee income, which would be distributed away from the institution to which a student pays his or her fee. It would seriously compromise the direct relationship between a student's fees and their education."

That old rectangular-based model for skyscrapers is so last season...or century, really. he international real estate development and investment arm of Dubai Holding, today announced the commencement of construction work for its highly anticipated 'Dubai Towers - Dubai'. I think we have a 8th wonder of the modern world in making. The Dubai Towers are the most mesmerizing piece of architecture that is to hit the world in this century, at least in my opinion. "The four towers, ranging from 54 to 97 floors, are clustered to form a choreographed sculpture, representing the movement of candlelight", the architect write in their press release from January this year. I love the structure of the building. It looks so complex. I love the curves of the towers and how they look like they are just slightly twisting. The twists and waves are extremely subtle, but you can't possible not notice them. The effect is so elegant it leaves you breathless. Honestly, I'd make a trip to Dubai only to look at these towers (and manage some shopping as well!). The four towers, ranging from 54 to 97 floors take inspiration from a flickering candleflame.

Construction of Burj Al Arab began in 1994. It was built to resemble the sail of a dhow, a type of Arabian vessel. Two "wings" spread in a V to form a vast "mast", while the space between them is enclosed in a massive atrium. The architect Tom Wright said "The client wanted a building that would become an iconic or symbolic statement for Dubai; this is very similar to Sydney with its Opera House, or Paris with the Eiffel Tower. It needed to be a building that would become synonymous with the name of the country."

The architect and engineering consultant for the project was Atkins, the United Kingdom's largest multidisciplinary consultancy. The hotel was built by South African construction contractor Murray & Roberts. The hotel cost US$650 million to build.
